About the Event
Sugar Kings are a Boston-based ensemble known for their electrifying live performances, rich vocal harmonies, and deeply collaborative musicianship. Named after the historic Cuban baseball team, the group brings a spirit of celebration, spontaneity, and cultural exchange to every stage they play.
At the heart of Sugar Kings is a shared respect for the roots of Afro-Cuban Son, Salsa, and Rumba-Flamenca, traditions that form the rhythmic backbone of their sound. From there, the band branches outward—drawing inspiration from Roots, Rock, Reggae, and global musical traditions that reflect the diverse backgrounds and influences of its members. The result is a vibrant, genre-crossing sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
Each member is an accomplished musician in their own right, but the true magic of Sugar Kings lies in how they come together as a multilingual, multicultural group. Their performances unfold as an intimate, spontaneous dialogue—between the musicians on stage and the audience in the room. Every show becomes a living conversation powered by rhythm, improvisation, and joy.
The group’s lineup blends a rich range of musical voices. Guitarist and singer Patiño Vázquez brings soulful playing, singing and dynamic stage presence. Mik Mersha infuses the music with funk, reggae, and the harmonic and rhythmic influences of Ethiopia. Dan Abreu contributes soaring tenor saxophone work and expressive harmonic accompaniment, while Tony Curtis Hall anchors the sound with his distinct voice and rhythmic depth.
Together, Sugar Kings create a musical atmosphere where celebration is inevitable—a place where grooves run deep, cultures meet, and the line between band and audience disappears. Whether on a festival stage, in a club, or at a community gathering, when Sugar Kings play, it’s only a matter of time before the whole room, club, performance hall or festival is dancing.
