About the Event
Captain Raymond H. Bates, Jr., well-known Marblehead lobsterman, scallop and SCUBA diver, and lifelong maritime historian, is a man with stories to tell—and he tells them well. After years of researching and locating shipwrecks along the North Shore and Cape Ann coasts, Bates produced a popular Shipwrecks of the North Shore poster, which today hangs in many Marblehead homes and offices (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGME-CyOc2c).
Following that success, he threw himself deep into research, chronicling over 1,200 wrecks from Winthrop to Cape Ann. In 1988, he published Shipwrecks of Boston’s North Shore, Volume I: Salem Bay, and followed that up with Shipwrecks North of Boston, Volume 2—Cape Ann.
In this presentation, Bates, often called the “unofficial curator of the North Shore’s maritime history,” will discuss research as a process and tool.
His books and posters will be available for purchase.
