The Festival offers writers from all over Massachusetts an opportunity to submit their work, win awards and build community with other writers.

The 2018 Marblehead Writers Contest
*For writers unpublished in book length fiction or non-fiction.
*Self-published authors are welcome to submit their work including self-published items!
*Poets may be published in journals, chapbooks or other forms.
Open for submissions: March 26, 2018
Deadline for submissions: Midnight on Friday, June 15, 2018
Entry Fee: $10.00 per entry
Contest Categories: We are accepting submissions in the following categories:
Adult Fiction: This category encompasses fiction written for adult readers. All genres of adult fiction are welcome except erotica.
FINAL JUDGE FOR ADULT FICTION: Lana Popovic, Chalberg & Sussman Agency.
Adult Non-Fiction: This includes nonfiction works such as memoir, biography, travel narratives.
FINAL JUDGE FOR ADULT NONFICTION: Katie Rose Hope, M.I.T. Press
Young Adult Fiction: This contest category is for works of fiction in any subgenre generally aimed at, and appropriate for, a readership between the ages of 15 and 21 (for example, THE HUNGER GAMES by Susan Collins and THE HATE U GIVE by Angela Thomas.) Submissions in this category that judges agree are not clearly intended for this readership will be disqualified and not reassigned to another category.
FINAL JUDGE FOR YOUNG ADULT: Rebecca Podos, The Rees Agency
Children's Fiction: This contest category includes works written for Middle Grade (for ages 9 - 14), Chapter Book (also known as Easy Readers for ages 6 - 9), and Picture Book level fiction. All submissions text only, no illustrations; this is a writing contest.
FINAL JUDGE FOR CHILDREN'S FICTION: Ammi-Joan Paquette, Erin Murphy Literary Agency
Poetry: This contest category includes poetry of no more than 32 lines in length. Poets who have published their work in chapbooks or periodicals are welcome to submit.
FINAL JUDGE FOR POETRY: Barbara Siegel Carlson, Multi-published Massachusetts poet

The two finalists in each category will be judged by a literary agent, editor, or in the case of poetry, a multi-published author. Winners will be presented with the "Golden Cod Award" on Saturday June 30th during the Keynote Panel and Reception.
The “Essex Award" will be awarded to a single Essex County writer of great promise, selected from across all categories.
