Explore the Visual Arts Through a Range of Media

The Marblehead Festival of Arts features 10 visual art exhibits comprised of original work by artists in Essex County. Artwork is selected by judges with expertise and knowledge in their field of judging, and awards are distributed in each exhibit category.  Visitors are also invited to vote for their favorite work at each exhibit.  Most of the artwork displayed in the exhibits is available for sale.  Exhibit categories, locations, and descriptions are listed below.

Who are our artists....

Festival exhibits are open to artists who reside, work, or belong to an art association in Essex County. Student and Youth Art are open to Marblehead residents in public or private schools or art studio classes, and nonresidents attending school or art studio classes in Marblehead.

Crafts

See a juried exhibit of original handcrafts including calligraphy, quilts, textiles, furniture, jewelry, pottery and stained glass.

LOCATION: St. Michael's Church, 26 Pleasant St.

Come see a juried exhibit of original artwork in two or more media in a single composition, such as paint, collage, drawing, image transfer, assemblage, papier-mâché, wax and found objects. Pieces may be displayed as two- or three-dimensional surfaces.

LOCATION: Old town House One Town House Square

A juried exhibit of original photographs, created within the past three (3) years, in black-and-white or color. One of the most popular exhibits of the festival.

A juried exhibit of original three-dimensional sculptures encompassing all styles and genres, these works display an amazing range of artistic expression.

Digital Art

A new, small-scale juried exhibit of original two-dimensional artwork in a variety of digital techniques that are not represented in other Festival exhibit categories. Works are created and produced using digital technology and a direct result of the artist's work.

This is a juried exhibit of original drawings in pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, conté crayon and other media.

Enjoy a juried exhibit of original artwork in oil, ink, acrylic or watercolor. Classic media for today's contemporary artists.

A juried exhibit of original works in a variety of categories such as etching, engraving, dry point, linoleum cuts and other relief forms, silk-screen, lithography, monoprints, woodcut and wood engraving and other forms of printmaking.

Painting the Town

LOCATION: Marblehead Art Association,  8 Hooper Street

Plein Air painting is a French expression for painting outdoors. These fresh, often rapid works will capture the essence of Marblehead scenes and weather with a unique charm, unlike more careful studies created in a studio.

A non-juried exhibit of original work comprising crafts, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking and sculpture by persons 65 years of age and older. Creativity knows no boundaries.

The Festival encourages youth and students who live, go to school in or attend art classes in Marblehead to display their creative works. The Festival also offers scholarships to encourage the pursuit of the arts for study and for a lifetime of exploring your imagination.

Youth Art is Pre-school through 4th Grade  Non-juried exhibit of original work in the categories of crafts, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, digital arts, printmaking and sculpture.
