Ken Clark Organ Trio
— Jazz
Ken Clark and his Organ Trio with Mike Mele on guitar and Benny Benson
on drums kick off our thirty-seventh Festival. They have performed countless
gigs together, forging an organ jazz sound unique to themselves, preserving
the spirit of organ-jazz in a way that strict traditionalists cannot.
Clark, Mele and Benson have melded funk and modern jazz from the 70’s,
80’s, and 90’s with traditional organ jazz. Clark’s
powerful bass lines mixed with some exotic harmony forms the basis of
an organ jazz sound for the new millennium. This ain’t your fathers’
Jazz, but trust us, these guys play really cool music!
Dave Mattacks Trio — Jazz
The Dave Mattacks Trio is a Jazz piano trio performing standards you’ve
grown to love while exploring fantastic originals & contemporary
material. Their musical rapport is remarkable considering they have
only been together for two years. Drummer Dave Mattacks is known for
his outstanding work with legendary performers like Paul McCartney,
Elton John, Joan Armatrading, XTC, Jethro Tull, George Harrison and
Mary Chapin Carpenter, but his musical career is deeply rooted in Jazz.
Before moving to Marblehead from the UK, Mattacks worked extensively
in Europe with artists such as Lew Soloff, Georgie Fame & Gil Goldstein.
Complimenting Mattacks are Double Bassist Marty Ballou and Pianist Chris
Neville, two highly respected “bastions” of the New England
and Boston jazz scene. Neville’s’ credits include piano
and co-production of “Another Time, Another Place “ with
Benny Carter and Phil Woods. Marty Ballou’s career has seen him
performing and recording with artists such as Bruce Katz, Jay McShann,
Duke Robillard & Herb Ellis among many others. The trio will be
joined for their second set by their guest, saxophonist Matt Langley,
a member of the acclaimed Charlie Kolhase Quintet since 1988. Langley
has also performed and/or recorded with Ron Carter, Fred Hersch &
Tiger Okoshi.

One Step Further
Continuing to bring new artists from around the area to our festival,
One Step Further has been working for close to a year building their unique
original sound combining heavy metal riffs with alternative rock to make
a new innovative type of music. The band is made up of singer Kyle Lemieux,
Chris Kobialka on Guitar, Sam Beebe on Bass and Vocals, and drummer Ben
Breed. The Rumbletones — Rock ‘n
Blues
The Rumbletones have made a name for themselves around New England with
their hard driving roots and blues sound. They’ve gained momentum
attracting more followers to many types of venues for several years and
have been voted “Best Favorite New Local Band” in the publication,
The Noise Around Boston. The Rumbletones are a trio consisting of Mike
Yocco on bass and lead vocals, Steve Nocella on guitar and vocals, and
Eric Austin on drums and vocals. The Rumbletones continue to refine their
sound, expand their audience, and give 110% at each performance to entertain
and make everybody have a rockin’ good time! Jazmen
— Traditional Jazz
After the Alternative Rock sounds fade into the afternoon, it’s
time for the breeze of traditional Jazz to take over Crocker Park in the
form of Jazmen, a trio that plays both classic and contemporary and share
a love of Basie, Monk, Gershwin, and Jobim. Jazmen perform ballads, blues,
Latin music, and straight-ahead jazz. Their sound is described as sweet,
soulful, simple and sophisticated. Jazmen are Mark Arnold of Swampscott
on Roland electric piano/keyboard, Don Kaplan of Marblehead on Epiphone
jazzbox and Blue McInturff guitars and Michael Elkin of Marblehead on
venerable upright bass Mudsole — New Orleans
Jazz
The MUDSOLE tradition.... it’s the whistle of the steamboat...the
smell of the river...the sound of the band. Mudsole brings authentic,
down to the muddy earth sound of a New Orleans Brass and Banjo trio to
our corner of the Northeast. Mudsole is Artie Barbato on Trumpet and Didjeridoo,
Jason Rogers on Trombone and Cajun Accordian and Dave Fabris on Banjo
and Guitar. Formed in the Spring of 1991 Mudsole has been featured on
“Entertainment Tonight” during Mardi Gras in New Orleans,
was selected to play at Bill Clinton’s First Inaugural Ball in 1993
and has also been featured at many Boston events, including The Tall Ships
and the Boston Aquarium. Jenny Paquette and the North
Country Band — Country
Jenny Paquette has opened for some of the biggest names in Country Music
while building her reputation as a multi-award winning vocalist, backed
by the multi-award winning North Country Band. Jenny hails from Maine
and splits her time between the East Coast and Nashville where she’s
achieved the dream of all country musicians, to perform on the Grand Ole
Opry Stage. With the popularity of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, Jenny’s
performing talent, vocal ability and song writing could easily propel
her to that level of cross-over success. |

Brian Strout and
Reversal of Motion
Continuing to be a venue for young local musicians, the New Local Artist
Series at Crocker Park features Brian Strout and the band Reversal of
Motion. R.O.M. performs music for the idle, that serves as phonetic
proof of education and emotion. With youthful undertones they play a
melodic hybrid of music, that carries a message of peace, acceptance,
and unity. Or, as the wise old Mr. Jagger aptly put it, “I know
it’s only rock ‘n roll, but I like it!”
KatFish Jr — Rock, Folk & Blues
Mix three great local musicians together with timeless material and
you’ve got KatFish Jr. which is a side project for all three musicians.
KatFish Jr. features Tim Walsh on keyboards and vocals (from KatFish
& formerly, the Land Sharks), Bill Ross, (who’s played with
Mamadou and the Guy Ford Band) on percussion and Michael Kehn on Bass
(from the Guy Ford Band), performing classic hits from 60’s through
90’s by artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,
the Grateful Dead, Counting Crows and Dire Straits. KatFish Jr. - just
great musicians playing great music!
The Faculty — Good Old Rock & Roll!
You’ve all heard of garage bands that became musical legends -
Have you heard the one about the teachers from the Faculty Lounge that
became a great band? Well, meet The Faculty, a group of Swampscott High
School teachers who will “school you” with great songs from
the late 1950’s through the 1970’s. The Faculty are English
teacher Will Higgins on drums; TV Production teacher Tom Reid on vocals,
bass and keyboards; Special Ed teacher Tom Kerans (who performs with
local band, The Catalinas) on vocals and guitar; Social Studies teacher
Paul Maguire on vocals and trumpet; Music teacher and High School Band
Director, Ed Jack on saxophone and keyboards; Phys Ed teacher Cindy
Lavender, Guidance Counselor Meredith Reardon and Foreign Language teacher
Pat Shanahan all on vocals.
MAMADOU— World Music
Big rains washed out last year’s performance of the Boston Music
Award nominee MAMADOU — we wanted to give them another chance
to entertain. Weaving together diverse musical traditions with the powerful
rhythms of his West African home, the unique and high-energy music of
Mamadou Diop and his Jolole Band set feet and spirits dancing.
Lenahan — Traditional Irish & Boogie Blues
Celtic-rock band, Lenahan, blend traditional Irish Uilleann Bagpipes
and Fiddles with Les Paul Guitars, switching on a dime from 12 bar blues
to foot stomping jigs! If you can imagine a dozen different instruments
performed in true Irish tradition mixed with boogie-woogie blues, Lenahan
will excite you with music you’ll remember for years to come! |
