A hanging bird's nest,
composed of several nestling sections,
sways as it hangs before you,
tattered and torn.
Frequently what inspires me are the materials I use. They are what surround me in daily life and many of them are recycled, having a past of their own. I like the different tactile qualities of objects, the knottiness of hair and chain, the fragility of glass balls, the etherealness of feathers. I handle each material according to its nature; photographs pressed between glass, capsules and pearls strung on thread, braided grosgrain ribbon, copper colored thread delicately wrapped and then burned…to create a tattered effect.
The components are used for their tactile qualities and the potential to be manipulated by my hand, a continuation of my craftsman's training. My intention is to transform mere objects into forms that provoke a feeling of lightness and weight and also convey a sense of longing and another point in time.
It is the possibility of their history, or rather imagined history, that allows me to delve into my work and attempt to tell a story. |
